THRILLING SET OF FINALS CLOSE OUT ROUND 3
MAHDZAN – PONCELET – HANEGRAEF – MINNE TAKE TOP SPOTS
9 October 2022, AKSARAY (Türkiye): Round 3 of the World Downhill Skateboarding Championship in Aksaray, Turkiye delivered a suitably fitting and thrilling finale of races after a testing weekend for competitors – Abdil Madzhan, Diego Poncelet, Jasmin Hanegraef and Elchje Minne running out the deserved winners in their respective categories.
Madzhan followed up his top spot in qualifying to dominate the Open Street Luge final, winning his semi-final and then powering off the start line to lead and boss the final from start-to-finish, the win catapulting the Malaysian rider to top spot in the championship standings.
David Frega and Kolby Parks battled for second spot, with France’s Frega backing up his second place in qualifying, winning his semi and taking the runners-up slot, Parks completing the podium ahead of Andrew Speight.
The Open Standup final was simply sensational – equivalent to two prize fighters exchanging blows round after round and in this case from the launch off the start line, including a false start, and corner after corner; if there was one overtake between Gregoire Schwab and Diego Poncelet it would have been deemed close, but there were at least six changes of lead with Spaniard Poncelet seizing on a slight mistake in the latter stages from the Swiss rider to take victory and extend his lead in the world championship standings, third place going to Yanis Markarian ahead of top qualifier Alexandros Tzouganakis.
In the women’s final Belgium’s Jasmin Hanegraef came from behind to overhaul championship points leader Grace Wong after a coming together and taking the chequered flag, with Wong losing a further place to Myrjam Weissschuh but finishing ahead of Selina Theiler.
In the two-woman shootout in Luge, Elchje Minne completed a good day for Belgium, edging Germany’s Julie Erz.
