PONCELET – DIEZ – WONG TOP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS

25 July, 2022, LONDON: Diego Poncelet, Mikel Echegaray Diez and Grace Wong top the 2022 World Downhill Skateboarding Championship standings following the two spectacular opening rounds in Monticiano, Italy and Kozakov in the Czech Republic earlier this month which kick-started a new era for the sport.

The two events thrilled spectators with super close and competitive board-to-board racing, full of drama and incidents, with records broken and equalled.

In Open Stand Up, Spain’s Poncelet launched his season with a dominant performance, qualifying quickest and backed that up with a win in the opener in Monticiano. Despite equalling the track record in practice in Kozakov, he failed to make the final and taking sixth overall.

It was another Spaniard, Diez, who was impressive in Luge; in Italy he edged all three runs in a thrilling qualifying session, then winning both his heats and taking victory in the final. In Kozakov he beat his own track record and again dominated qualifying, but lost out in the final to take the runners-up slot.

Malaysia’s Wong was the fastest women rider in Stand Up in the season-opener and looked to be the odds on favourite to take the win, but a tumble early in the final proved costly, recovering well to take second place, making amends in Kozakov going quickest in qualifying and winning the final.
